English Only! Are you sure?

English Only! Are you sure? 

‘English only, please! You must speak English. No Japanese.’

They say that this strict policy is good for the students. Forcing students to ignore their native language helps them. The students’ their learning potential is maximized and…HOLD ON! Wait just a minute! Just a moment, please!
Is it really bad to use Japanese when you are learning? Or, is it just part of a very successful promotion campaign used by many schools and educational institutions? The answer is a little of both. Let’s take a closer look at this issue and see if we can get a better understanding so we can make our own decision.

Point!  Japanese people need an only English learning environment because they are good at writing but not speaking.

If we look at the issue from a cultural point of view it is perhaps easy to understand why this policy has become so popular. It is a common for many Japanese people to have a stronger understanding of written English. Such people cannot confidently and smoothly express themselves when speaking in English. We can understand this because Japan is a largely mono-lingual society and this means that there are very few chances to speak English. Also, Japanese culture tends to look negatively upon making mistakes, so it is not surprising that Japanese learners of English want to focus on what they do better, writing. 

So, ‘English Only’ in classrooms, right?

Well, yes, it is very beneficial to get as much speaking and listening practice in the classroom as possible. Students can get very valuable practice and confidence by speaking English in a ‘safe’ environment where mistakes are OK. But does that mean we have to avoid using Japanese all the time? Will using some Japanese damage the students’ learning potential? Not exactly. You see, using English only comes with some risk, too. Let me explain.

The human brain is an incredible, and yet, very predictable organ. When we are young our brain is like a new computer. Its super fast, has a huge memory, gigabytes of ram, and makes an Intel microchip seem like a sleepy snail. Also, the young mind has no patterns, it’s not pre-programmed or hardwired. You can ask it to do pretty much anything and the young brain will do it. Unfortunately, the adult brain is not the same. 

An adult’s brain is like your old computer. You like it because you know where everything is. You know all the files and what are in them. You’ve got templates everywhere, and you’ve created desktop shortcuts, copies and backups for everything. The computer’s performance is not as fast as it used to be, and the memory is nearly full, but you know it so well that you could close your eyes and still use it. It’s like an old shoe; it fits you perfectly. 

Can you see where I’m going with this? Which kind of brain do you think would react better to a flood, an overflow of new information, like being exposed to a foreign language non-stop for an hour? You guessed it, the young brain. 

An adult brain is preprogrammed from years and years of use and when we ask it to behave and react in a strange way, it will try its very best to reject the new way and stick with what is old and comfortable. Sure, after time, the brain will slowly force itself to change, but only with a very very good reason. Learning English as a hobby for easier travel, or because the company requires us to study, are often not strong enough reasons for the brain to give up its old habits. So, when you enter a language classroom as an adult, all the information that you receive is being processed by your very annoyed brain. It wants to keep its old habits and your brain will try to fit all of the new information into the files and templates it has already created, even if the old file and new information don’t really match completely. 

Have I lost you? Are you still following me? Well, maybe this example will help. Student A goes to a lesson and today’s topic is ‘Describing People’ the student hears the teacher say the phrase, ‘Tom is very smart. He goes to a very good university.’ Well, Student A’s brain already has a file for that word スマート, meaning ‘thin’. Sure, the example from the teacher is quite good; the teacher is trying to make students guess the meaning with the hint about Tom going to a good university. But has Student A processed the information correctly.

Well, unfortunately, Student A’s brain locked on to the familiar, to what it knew already. ‘Smart, yes,’ the brain says, ‘I have a file for that. I know the meaning. Next word please.’ Now, with enough time and experience we can force our brain to pause and carefully process information, but very often that is not possible. We may only study English, once a week, for 50 minutes, and our teacher only has 50 minutes to open our brains and confirm that the information has been processed and stored correctly. And what is the risk? Well, if the information is stored incorrectly, and we don’t discover the error, the danger is that that error will become locked in the file and will never be able to be deleted. 

Remember, Japan is a mono-lingual environment and there are very few chances to discover the error outside of the classroom, unless you are using English every day. The only time when the error can be found is at that moment, in the classroom with the teacher. It would be much simpler if we take some simple risk management and use Student A’s first language to confirm that the word has been stored in the right file. Obviously, the example I used with the word ‘smart’, is very simple. I hear you say, the teacher could easily confirm the meaning with the student in English! Well, maybe: 

Teacher: ‘Let’s think of some smart people. Well, there is Albert Einstein and Steve Jobs. They were very smart.’ 

Student A’s brain: Yes, those people were thin I guess.

Teacher: Student A, who do you think is smart?

Student A’s brain: I guess the teacher likes thin famous scientists and inventors. 
Student A: I think Thomas Edison was smart.
              
Teacher: That’s a great example.

Ok, so maybe my example probably would not happen; it is too simple. However, the risk is there, especially for much more complicated language and grammar. And yet this risk could be minimized with one simple step:

Teacher: Good example, Student A. So what do you think smart means in Japanese?

Student A: Hosoi 細い.

Teacher: Ah, Ok. I think we need to review the meaning in English again. Smart has a different meaning in English.  

Just remember this. The adult brain likes what is familiar and it will try very very hard to fit new information into what it already knows, especially when it is not under pressure to change. 

So, I finish my post with these questions and answers:

Q. Do Japanese speakers need more chances to communicate in English?
A. Absolutely

Q. Can translation be used responsibly as a confirmation to tool help support an adult student’s learning?
A. Absolutely.

Q. Why are schools telling us that using Japanese in class is bad?
A. I don’t know.

A Good Night’s Sleep – Defrag Your Body

Did you know that the restorative function of sleep may be a consequence of the enhanced removal of potentially neurotoxic waste products that accumulate in the awake central nervous system? Ok, first of all let's decode this scientific lingo to something we can all understand. Basically, when we sleep scientists believe that our body goes into super clean-up mode and removes a lot of the bad stuff in our body. Imagine it is like a computer defragging the hard drive! Yep, our sleep is very important.

Sleep has been a big issue in my life recently. Both my university students and I don't seem to be getting enough sleep; albeit for very different reasons. For my students, working late part-time jobs and staying up late watching TV etc seems to be the main cause for their lack of sleep. As for me, my bed is…how do I put it kindly...my bed is more ancient than Egypt. I think if I look inside the mattress I might just discover a dinosaur skeleton. Ok, maybe I am exaggerating a little bit. But, in my defense, it was already used when I bought it, and it definitely has a retro 70's look and feel to it. Anyway, I think you get the picture; it is not very comfortable and my nightly defrag has suffered greatly in the last six months especially.

Well, no more! Indeed, last week I purchased a new bed! Now, if you have never bought a new bed, when you do, be ready for a very difficult experience. The makers, shops and sales staff will flood you with attractive words like: beauty rest, revolutionary latex foam, comfort layer, body zone design, ergonomics design…and on and on and on. Ok, so basically what they mean is that every mattress is the perfect one for me. Well, that is not very helpful! So, what did I do? Like any good twenty-first century citizen, I headed straight to the only one who has ALL the answers. Yep, that's right, Google Sensei! A quick search for the different brands and mattresses would surely give me the answers I needed to choose the perfect bed. Nope. Instead, I discovered that every mattress was supposedly good half the time, and each mattress was also apparently bad half of the time. Well, Google Sensei does like to keep a good balance of Yin and Yang. After my research, I was left feeling even more confused.

Ok, so researching the internet for mattress user satisfaction information did not help me very much. What I did find out, however, was some very good advice. One – You should try each mattress before you decide to buy and try sleeping on it for fifteen minutes. Two – Never go to buy a bed when you are feeling tired because every bed will feel heavenly. I took this advice and finally decided on a new bed. Will I be sleeping like the dead? Will I no longer toss and turn at night? Will I no longer wake up with a sore back and shoulder? Will my body defrag finally operate at peak efficiency? Stay tuned and I will let you all know. Wish me luck! :)

Get Real! Get Native! - The Origin Story

毎週月曜19：00開講の「Get Real! Get Native! 〜リアルな英会話を〜」で使用されるスクリプトは、毎回講師のニックが作成しています。（レッスンの紹介はこちらをご覧ください。）

レッスンはどのようにして始まったのか、そのストーリーはどのようにして始まったのかをご紹介します。

It’s interesting to wonder why we love origin stories so much. Spiderman, Batman, Ironman, Superman – we love this stuff! Well, to be specific I think we love imagining what would happen if we woke up one day with super powers. You would either freak out and head straight to the hospital, or jump for joy and spend all day trying out all your new powers. I would be the latter. Ok, sorry, I’m going off topic. Let’s get back to the origin of Get Native.

Get Native, if you didn’t know, was one of the first classes I developed for Stella Innovations. It was my baby, and when it was born it became my joy. You see, it was more than I hoped for.

The idea for Get Native grew from a realization I had regarding language learning, both from my students’ experiences and my own learning Japanese. Have you ever wondered why language textbooks are so popular? Well, the answer is quite simple; they offer structure, order and provide a good reference for independent study. These are all good things. We humans, we do like structure and order. The problem is, language is not always so structured and orderly.

Language is like a creature, living, breathing and growing. It’s also spontaneous – that means you never know what someone is going to say, it’s often not what you expected. Sure, there are social pleasantries and norms we have to follow: How are you? I’m fine, thanks. But a lot of language is not like that, and that can be quite discouraging and demotivating for people learning a language.

I hear people talk about speed, and accent. I can’t understand; people talk too fast. I can understand an American accent, but I can’t understand British people. Well, maybe. Then again, maybe there is another problem happening. Expectations are not being met, and when the unexpected happens, I’m not ready for it; I haven’t trained myself how to react. And so began the idea of Get Native.

A lot of students I knew when I was teaching in New Zealand loved the TV show ‘Friends’. One thing I noticed after they had watched a lot of episodes of this funny American drama was that they began to laugh more and more with each show they watched. Now, you have to remember, a lot of the humor in the show is verbal and not just visual. Also, there certainly wasn’t a lot of ‘text book’ language being used. So, what was happening? How had they improved their understanding and more importantly, their enjoyment?

Maybe you could say it was just repetition; they had watched the show so many times and heard the same language being used again and again, and their brains had processed and internalized the words and phrases. Maybe. But every show had a different theme. Certainly, some words and phrases were repeated, but they were using phrases with me in our daily conversation that they had only heard once on the TV show.  So, what was going on? I think it was the enjoyment; they were having so much fun and this opened up their minds to the language. It opened all the doors and all the data flooded in and as the language came in they would pick and choose the words and phrases they liked and store them so they could use them themselves. The TV show scenes and the words connected to them were so fun and memorable, that their mind had no trouble processing and storing the information. In fact, their brain wanted to store the information!
Not only that, but they were also not nervous about the unexpected. Their brain did not put up the walls of fear and negativity when it encountered new language. Nope, their brains were opening all the doors, breaking all the walls and working at a super pace and power to guess and infer meaning from the context of the characters interactions in the show. At least, this is what I think was happening in their heads. I couldn’t see inside, of course.

Well, this is what I wanted students to experience in the Get Native class. I wanted to give them a class that would show them language in its true creative, natural and spontaneous form. I wanted them to laugh, and to enjoy the experience so much, that all of the doors in their mind would open and they would stay positive. I wanted them to want to remember the words and phrases they discovered. And I think we have succeeded.

They may not know it, but the students in Get Native are working their minds at a super pace, and with super power. Maybe they are not aware of it, but it’s happening. So, I guess, in a way, they are becoming super heroes.

A Man's House Is His Castle. - Part 2 – Romantic medievalism at it’s best!

When you think of romantic medieval knights and their damsels, the honorable, if not slightly barbaric sport of jousting should come immediately to your mind. If you had thought this sport had died out hundreds of years ago, you’d be wrong; it’s been kept alive by the brave men and women at Warwick Castle.

To be fair though, I don’t think that the real jousting tournaments would have had epic movie music accompanying the heroic knights as they poked at each other with giant sticks – sorry, lances – and hacked at each other with blunted blades. Still, it certainly made the action much more exciting. When we arrived we chose to stand at the south end of the field. Little did we know that our ignorant decision would place on the side of York, whose knights were a little less than chivalrous, performing such ignoble deeds as name calling and back-stabbing. In their defense though, the Knights from York fought very well.

You see, King Henry had put on this tournament not for the lowly peasants – that would be us – but to find a new leader for his army fighting the French. If it was up to me, I would have given the job to the Yorks due to their ‘ends justify the means’ attitude. Hey, now don’t get mad, everyone wants to be on the winning team. But alas, King Henry decided that the chivalrous Lancasters had rightly earned the job. You see, the Lancasters may have lost the tournament, but they lost so graciously. Just how the French would like English leaders to be I’d say.

A Man's House Is His Castle. - Part 1

For most of us, this famous quote is purely a metaphor. For William the Conqueror, it was actual fact! Yes indeed, Warwick Castle's first keep and tower was built in 1068, and thanks to the company that bought it, Tussauds Group, the castle and all its towers, ramparts and stately residences are still standing today. Well, whether you want to thank the company depends very much on your point of view. If you are a historian you nay be a little...disappointed that the castle and its grounds have largely been turned into a medieval theme park. If, however, you are a parent or fantasy buff, you will probably thank Tussauds for providing a place where chivalrous knights joust for ladies favours and giant machines of war fling massive stones far into the distance. Oh, did I mention you can try your hand at archery, explore a dungeon, watch giant birds of prey and see a dragon, too? Yep, its all there...for a price, naturally. This is a family and tourist attraction, so expect Warwick Castle to be pretty crowded and expect tourist prices for food and drinks. Bring food for your own picnic and your wallet and taste buds will thank you.

Warwick Castle is not for those who want peace and quiet, either. Epic movie music blasts through the courtyard and accompanies the knights as they drive their lances at each other. If you do start feeling a little stressed and want a bit more privacy, the gardens are massive and quite beautiful. You can also climb the 500 or so stairs to the top of the ramparts and towers. Its a bit quieter at the top and the views are great. You should know, though, its a one way walk. Once you start the climb to the the top of the towers there is no going back! Why? Space. Its a very narrow walkway and it is single file all the way. 

There is no denying that Warwick Castle is probably the most refurbished and complete castle in all of England. There is also no denying that it is the most expensive. I guess feeding a dragon is not cheap.

The Harrods motto is Omnia Omnibus Ubique—All Things for All People!

Now, you might be thinking that I am in an old submarine, maybe Captain Nemo's Nautilus; I certainly felt like I was. But no, here I am in the Harrods Department Store elevator or lift. Harrods describes itself as a luxury, upmarket department store, so I was a little concerned that I would be under-dressed; I was wearing jeans and a T-shirt. To be honest, though, there were so many people from different countries and different walks of life that I didn't feel out of place at all...well, most of the time. If you are looking for some nice souvenirs, perhaps the quintessential teddy-bear goods or a box of shortbread with pictures of the Queen and Prince William, then the Harrods Shop and Food Department should be your first two stops, and you certainly won't feel out-of-place if you are wearing jeans and a t-shirt in these places. If you do, however, wish to put on your suit or your cocktail dress, you will also feel very comfortable; there are lots of big spenders, too. All the designer brands, jewellery watches and furniture are waiting for you. Maybe it's just my imagination, but if they don't have something they'll probably order it in for you while you wait with a complimentary glass of Champagne - unfortunately my wallet was not big enough to test this belief. Did you know that in the 1960s Harrods sold someone a lion!!!! Anyway, I realised I had unintentionally entered the luxury zone when I looked at the price of a blanket and nearly fainted when I read the 1000 pound (¥150,000) price tag. 

In my hasty retreat, however, I found myself lost in a maze of other similarly luxurious and expensive sections. I think that is the store's strategy, force you to spend all day in the luxury section trying to find a way out, all the while looking at the lovely, shiny and glamorous goods that promise so much happiness if you would only hand over your credit card to one of the smiling staff. Well, I was not to be tricked! Not only did we exit Harrods with no designer goods or royal family cookies, but we also departed with no teddy-bear bag. (Oh, alright, I admit it! We looked for a teddy-bear bag, but they didn't have any that season ;))

England is buzzing! 

One thing I've missed since emigrating to Japan is seeing bees. It's only natural of course, cities are bigger here and the green world that bees need is far away in the county side. Well, a trip to the Cotswolds in England is perfect if you are looking to get your bee fix. There are thousands of these hard working, furry little nectar sipping insects. You have two fine examples of the bee world on show, the stream lined and zippy honey bees and the 'if Schwarzenegger was a bee', Bumble Bee - seen here in the photo I took at Hidcote Gardens near Chipping Camden. Of course, where there are bees, there are also...(cue suspense music)...WASPS! (Yes, Japan, bees and wasps are very separate creatures.) If you are eating outside in the Cotswolds be prepared for these greedy, tiger striped creatures with machine gun stingers to come and join you. You have two ways to deal with the situation; A: You can jump up, scream wildly, run and let the wasps have your lunch, or B: You can set aside a small portion of your lunch and share your food. Here is a tip; wasps love jam as much as Paddington likes marmalade, so Keep a small pot of this sticky, sugary syrup with you and open it up when you are eating lunch, and you and your new wasp friend will soon be dining in separate bliss.

Do you have a sinking feeling in the afternoon? Time for Afternoon Tea!

Well, Anna did, especially around 4pm. Anna, of course, was the 7th Duchess of Bedford, and was quite the vixen. Who knows, perhaps it was her hunger pains that gave her these scandalous tendencies. Anyway, Anna’s response to her growling tummy was to have a light meal in the afternoon, consisting of tea and sandwiches or sweets. But the trend didn’t really catch on until Queen Victoria began satisfying her sinking feeling and those of her lady friends with a spot of tea and a light snack, probably sponge cake as that was her favourite. So began the tradition of ‘Afternoon Tea’. I had my first Afternoon Tea in a lovely tea room in Moreton-in-Marsh called, ‘Mrs T.Potts Teamroom’. I decided not to partake in the sponge cake, instead opting for a scone. Queen Victoria would understand; she wasn't one to follow others. And did I cut my scone in half? Absolutely not! I am a man of the strictest refinement and tradition, after all. It’s true!

Plastic cup for the Phantom!

Of all the fantastics shows waiting for avid fans of musicals, it is perhaps the Phantom of the Opera that remains the most loved. It is not a complicated story; Phantom meets Opera, Opera meets Phantom, Phantom meets young attractive singer, young attractive singer meets Phantom, Phantom woos young singer, young attractive singer then meets handsome man, Phantom gets jealous and begins his fiendish plan, handsome man responds with his own clever plan, attractive young singer all the while is in the middle. Hmm...that was more complex than I thought! Still, whether you love theatre and musicals, or not, this story of love, betrayal, murder, forgiveness and redemption is a must see, and unless your heart is made of ice you will shed a tear or two for the Phantom by the end. Two things to remember: you can get discounted tickets if you buy on the day you go and apparently the Phantom doesn't want you brining glass into his opera - you'll have to settle for plastic, just like I did.

British Natural History Museum

There is only one way to deal with a Tyrannosaurus Rex, and that's to wait 65 million years after their extinction and visit the British Natural History Museum! Still, I think you will agree that this fine replica of a T-Rex's head looks pretty life-like. And there is a lot of other realism going on in a place which houses the bones of millions year old dinosaurs. The stone statues of lions and wolves that line the outside walls of this incredible building look like something out of Ghostbusters, and so real that they look as though they are watching you, checking to see that you don't jump the queue while your waiting to get in to the Museum. Or, perhaps they are watching carefully to see how much money you donate to the Museum. Oh, and make sure you get to the museum early or you may be waiting in line, all the while under the fearful gaze of the museum's stone guardians for a very long time...you may even become extinct yourself.

Nick's memoirs of England, UK Part 1

Here I am on the bridge near Big Ben and the parliament building, Westminster Abbey, where the British parliamentarians were a wasp nest of activity discussing the Prime Minister's call for action in Syria. At the time, I must admit I was more interested in finding out how loud Big Ben's chime would be, which was not as loud as I expected. I was hoping to feel the ring right down into my bones and feel the bridge shake beneath my feet. Sadly, it was not so. Still, it is a beautiful clock tower. 

Beware the unofficial campaign ladies thrusting small fake flowers at you and asking for donations to the 'homeless' children. Their chimes were just as predictable as Big Ben's.
